Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg

Founded in 1743, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of the largest universities in Germany, with almost 40,000 students, 244 degree programmes, 4,000 academic staff (including over 580 professors), 171 million euros (2013) third-party funding, and 500 partnerships with universities all over the world. Teaching at the University is closely linked to research and focuses on training students in both theory and practice to enable them to think critically and work independently. The research itself also strikes the perfect balance between a theoretical approach and practical application.

The Institute of Philosophy

The Institute of Philosophy at FAU in Erlangen has a very rich history. Fichte and Schelling are only two out of many important scholars who worked there. Scholars of Philosophy of Science and Engineering might be familiar with the Erlangen School of Methodical Constructivism by Wilhelm Kamlah and Paul Lorenzen and its offspring, Methodical Culturalism, which turned the attention to the practical foundations of science and technology in everyday life.

The chair of innovation and value creation

The Chair of Innovation and Value Creation at the Institute of Information Systems at FAU plays a key role in the interdisciplinary activities of the university. Its staff has a very diverse background in economics, social sciences, philosophy, computer science and engineering. This enables the chair to work together with various other institutes of FAU in many different projects. The research focus of the chair is set on open innovation and service innovation.

Partner Organizations

The Association of German Engineers (VDI) is the largest engineering association in Western Europe, representing more than 150,000 members from engineering, the natural sciences and IT. Since its foundation in 1856, the VDI has played a major role in the establishment of engineering as a scientific discipline, the development of higher technical education and the promotion of a deeper reflection on technology in society.
